Yes, it's a real thing. I peeled and cut up a medium squash last night and almost immediately noticed the skin on my right thumb looked really peculiar, all white and dried out. Originally I thought "oh well, better start using gloves when I wash dishes cold weather" but today I found the skin on both hands flaky and peeling. I Googled it and sure enough, butternut squash is a strong exfoliant.
I did notice that this squash was unusually moist, to the point that beads of liquid ran out of it when sliced. I'm headed to the kitchen supply store for a pack of food-safe gloves for my future squash prep because flaky prune fingers is not my best look.

Yep...it has happened to me a few times in the past. That's why I always either wear a glove or hold the squash with a paper towel when I peel them now.

Thanks for sharing that, Karen, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I've never experienced it before, but it was a weirdly juicy squash and a big one so I was in contact with it a long time. I'll get good use of the gloves for other things to like doing spice rubs on meat and poultry. Mustard, turmeric, paprika, chili powder, curry powder etc. are so bad for staining my nails.

Well, that certainly explains quite a bit. We also grow butnut, so I'm handling it a fair amount and always wondered why my hands got a bit weird. I've been using kitchen gloves for years now because of that (and other food handling reasons - it just makes sense to protect the hands, ya know?).
