I have this in the oven for a harvest themed brunch tomorrow. This is my favorite apple cake. I think some of you have also made it. I use regular cream cream cheese and butter instead of the nonfat cream cheese and margarine called for in the recipe. It's been my go to apple cake since it was published in 1997. Today I threw caution to the wind and used the entire 8 oz block of cream cheese instead of the 6 oz the recipe calls for.

Thank you! Do you think cutting back on the sugar (dramatically) would affect the texture much? Looks wonderful.

I did cut back the sugar in the cake batter by about 1/3 cup. I have no idea if cutting back more would cause issues.

PattiA -- I made that cake years back after reading about it for years on the old CLBB. I so agree, It was really good. I also like the apple cake on smittenkitchen. No surprise I'm a fan of all types of apple desserts.

I thought I'd commented on this thread but no. guess not. I made this for DHs birthday and it is delightful. I wanted a brunch/coffee cake type cake, not over whelmingly sweet or rich. this was perfect. Love it. Thank you.
I used butter, Neufchatel cream cheese and honey crisp apples. I sprinkled some chopped walnuts on top along with the cinnamon sugar.
