Today's daily special bento box had a wonderful salad with pickled cucumbers, a little bit of seaweed, tons of sesame seeds and what I think was another vegetable I can't identify and the staff, due to a language barrier, couldn't help with. It was sliced really thin, about 1/16 inch and each slice was bright yellow with a dark orange border. The texture was very distinctive, somewhere between the chew of some calimari and just nicely meaty. Distinctly different from the crunch of the other ingredients. Any ideas?

I wondered if it was a type of radish---watermelon radishes have a beautiful red/pink ring with pink flesh...but the "meaty" texture makes me wonder if it is a pressed meat of some sort. This is fascinating me so I am googling my head off. I wonder if it is a type of seaweed; that tends to have a more meaty chew and comes in different shapes, sizes and colors.

A yellow beet or turnip that has been compressed? I've never had that, but I imagine that would make a beet more meaty in texture.

I wish I had taken a photo of it. I hope they serve that salad again because it was really good. We often have no clue what we're eating but it's usually tasty. I think it was too big and oddly shaped for a seaweed. The total length of whatever it was was around 3 inches, with that bright yellow core and very thin orange rind, almost like some tiny squash but with that wonderful meaty mouthfeel. I'm going to look at the produce at my local Asian markets and see if I can find a vegetable that color and size.
