Wow. I wish that I had stood that firmly when I felt same as a little kid. Waaaaay back then it was so normal to have meat and potatoes, and think that was a real meal, every single day. I never heard ANYBODY give the animals a thought. But I did and it never did settle right with me. I felt guilty FOR FEELING THAT WAY. NOW, I feel relieved of the obligation to eat meat so much. Even my husband seems to not care. He does most of the cooking and even gave up putting bacon in everything in last 6 months or so. We still have some red meat once in awhile...but it's sure not daily. We grow a garden and my husband and I both participate in some aspect of harvesting, prepping, freezing, etc. And we eat the BEST stuff. My husband has DISCOVERED the most amazing side of himself. He has had zero cooking schooling...so he makes things up as he goes along (unless I shove a recipe at him OR he opens up his beloved King Arthur Whole Grain Cookbook...or Joy of)...and you would be shocked at the food he makes. I will have to start posting more of his 'makes.' Easy, simply, usually fairly healthy...fresh...and seldom any thing that ever roamed around -- although he still keeps buying Boar's Head Black whatever ham for his sandwiches and canned salmon, ditto.) I've never been inclined to not eat meat, but that was pretty much the case when dh was still working. Since he was gone half the time I cooked for one and rarely ate meat. I think the only time I did was in spring rolls with chicken or shrimp.
We have a lot of meat-free meals, but we still eat chicken, pork, seafood, and occasionally beef.

Oh, I saw that on FB. I thought it was cute but I also felt that her mother - or whoever was filming it - was exploiting the child to some extent. It reminded me of the parent-filmed video of a child trying to talk her parents out of being mean to each other.

Riverfarm, AGREED. That poor kid was brainwashed or told what to say. I have nothing against vegetarianism. I was a vegetarian, but this appears manipulated. At least to me it does. Sorry, not adorable at all...very painful to watch.

I respectfully disagree. If she were 8 or 10, I would side with you, but how old is she? 4? 5? She didn't even know that fish was an animal. When she was told it was, then she went back to her mantra "no animals"....Great if she decides to remain vegan or vegetarian, but right now, mommy-dearest is telling her what to say. My humble opinion.

I give up. She was clearly brainwashed.

I thought to self that probably her parents made the video because they live a veg life and probably have taught her why they do it .... and she is now being exposed (in the bigger world) to how other people eat...and the parents have explained it to her...and her reaction is so precious. She probably feels the way she does at this point, for real. SO, I think, they filmed her reaction in order to make a statement. I don't know if that is exploitation--lets hope not! That's a heavy word (maybe I'm very wrong about the word). It seems loaded with negative meanings that might not apply. We can't read into the video too much because we don't know anything else about the people involved. I did think it was sweet and it sometimes hurts a child's heart when she finds out what some foods are. Young children tend to not be conditioned yet to our established world and ways. I remember that reality show on tv, homesteaders something....where the young boy raises the most amazing pig. He's his pet...they love each other. The family sees the pig as a source of food and there is big drama about a huge get-together planned for all the homesteaders and the parents think it is time to kill the pig and present the meat at this big event. It broke the boy's heart...there was much drama about it. But the family wanted him to learn their values...that farm animals feed people and are for food. The boy got through it and became proud of the food he could offer. He became conditioned to the way his world lived. He became what his parents were. They were survivors and farmers and they taught him. So, I guess that little girl is now dealing with her own training, exposure to the world's expectations, her feelings, etc. And the parents want that shown for whatever reasons. I just remember feeling similar feelings as a little kid. But that little girl is taught to stand up for what she (for whatever reasons) believes. I have to like that value alone. I like to see kids who aren't afraid to be brave to the world (I mean...to the majority)...in a nice way, of course...if possible. Little girls especially.

Catbatty, I like your wording of "conditioned" vs. my wording of brainwashed. Your points are great. All kids live in the bubble of their family and if she is 4 and not going to a public school or preschool, she only knows..well, what she knows. Maybe I object to filming it and posting it for the world to see. In that way, perhaps I view it a little more as an exploit. We all have different upbringings and opinions; watching it was painful and not cute or swaying in any stretch...but hey, that's me and I am one in millions..others who enjoyed it should ..well, enjoy it.

I give up. She was clearly brainwashed. Charley, as I posted MY opinion and thoughts on it, there is no cause for you to "give up." No one is asking you to feel differently. We all perceive and interpret things as individuals. Where you saw this as "adorable" I watched it with pain and sadness....and we are both right for ourselves. Again, totally not trying to change your view on it.
