We know all of us ONLY cook from scratch and NEVER EVER buy premade stuff. No jars of sauces. NO, not for us!! We MAKE our own barbecued beans...and the sauce that goes in it -- green beans, too. We make our refried beans after long soaking the dried beans. Who ever heard of a good bread that is store-bought?? Dips? We couldn't be tempted. Heck, we even make our own crackers. NEVER let a box mix for muffins or cake touch our lips!
OH I am being silly, because I know that I am no kitchen purist. If something seems fairly un-chemicalized, not TOO processed, I sometimes buy and try. In fact, I'll be the first to admit we always keep around:
a can or two of Bushes BBQ Beans (vegetarian - after I doctor them up, they taste like baby back ribs are in em)
several cans of best quality canned green beans we can find (Libby's?) -- (I doctor them and do use bacon and onion sauteed first, rinse beans well in water to get the tin can taste out. we probably make these once a week!)
jar of Alfredo Sauce (Trader Joe's is good) - (doctored at home with sauteed veggies and half and half/spices/boiled pasta)
I know most of you turn up your noses, but I *love* Bisquick! (I doctor it, too, especially for pancakes - sour cream, buttermilk)
There is ONE cake I adore that starts with a cake mix. I haven't made it in years. I'm too ashamed. j/k (Yellow cake, vanilla instant pudding (I KNOW, I hate the stuff, but it works here), canned peaches, then iced with DreamWhip? whatever that frozen stuff is called)
Canned beans, usually Bush'es - (but we also have lots of dried beans)
Frito Lay Bean Dip - (on a whim, I added it to a chili bean sorta soup I made a few weeks back in the IP, along with a can of black beans. Have decided it added some texture that I liked, so now I've bought more of it)
Best refried beans that come out of a can (cause most are NOT like the real thing at all) - Bearitos brand.
Pagoda brand frozen CREAM CHEESE WONTONS!!!! OMG (just discovered them last week -- did NOT expect them to be so good)
Stovetop Stuffing, herb variety -- my real guilty pleasure - takes no time to whip up and so yum served with a dollop of sour cream: outstanding)
I'll add to my list as I think of more products, if any. HOW ABOUT YOU??? IF you have found ANY grocery item that you often keep around because you KNOW it's good or you KNOW you can develop something wonderful using it.... WHAT IS IT?? ANY SAUCES THAT ARE REALLY USEFUL AND TASTY, FOR INSTANCE??
