Hi, everyone.
Also posted on the soon-to-be-defunct- CL BB, where I thought I'd take a last opportunity to mine the "source of all knowledge" before it goes away. My choir will be taking a trip to northern Italy next summer; we’ll be performing Verdi’s Requiem. There's regular trip insurance, which protects you if you or a family member becomes ill and has to cancel. There's also a (more expensive) "cancel for any reason" policy, which gives you some protection if you want to cancel for other reasons, such as fear of terrorism or Zika virus, etc. Both are offered by Travel Guard.
I haven't traveled much. Do any of you experienced travelers have a recommendation which I should purchase?
Per TestKitchen45’s request, here are the trip details: The trip starts in Milan. On Day 2, we have a choice of side trips (1) Lake Maggiore and Palazzo Borromeo (free time in Stresa with a visit to Palazzo Borromeo and Gardens); (2) Isola Comacina (with a 6-course lunch at Locando dell'Isola) and a visit to Villa Balbianello; (3) art tour of Milan, with visits to S Maria della Grazie (convent which is home to The Last Supper), and a guided tour of the Pinacoteca Brera; (4) free time on one's own. I'm leaning toward #1 or #2; if you've been to either (or both), please feel free to comment and/or recommend!
We also wil have: a cruise on Lake Como; transfer to Venice (visits to St Mark's Basilica, Rialto bridge and market, and excursion to Murano); transfer to Verona , with excursion to Sirmione.
Thanks, and I've enjoyed "meeting" all of you over the years on the BB. Hope to continue here on the new site; thanks to all involved with setting it up!

Barbara, are you buying insurance for just yourself, or for the group? It is easier to make the decision for just yourself. Whether you get the Cancel for Any Reason is such a personal decision. We usually don't get the Cancel for Any Reason insurance, but if either your personal situation or the general state of the world concerns you enough that you might not want to go, the extra money spent on Cancel for Any Reason is a good investment so you don't have to worry about it. We did get Cancel for Any Reason insurance with lots of medical evac coverage when we went to Tanzania a few years ago. But if we go to places that are not remote, we get the regular insurance.

In the past I've used TravelEx, but the agent I've used for years now is affiliated with Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection so I've booked that for my upcoming trip to France. She feels it's excellent and much more responsive than TravelEx. I always select the more expensive option which covers for pre-existing conditions for the medical aspect of the insurance. I agree with PattiA about the cancellation options. You have to decide whether you're likely to need that service or whether you can just go with the less expensive plan.

The travel agent handling the tour is offering AIG Travel Guard. I'd never considered Cancel for Any Reason previously, but recall hearing about travelers to the Olympics concerned about zika virus (hopefully not a problem in northern Italy) and of course all of the terrorism stuff. It's a whole different world post-9/11.

You should look at your credit card company to see what they offer. Many do these days so it helps to know what it covers. I'm not sure if the trip insurance includes health insurance should someone get sick on their vacation. A recent story made me rethink if I have to travel out of the US what I would do. An Indiana woman who was in Mexico for her granddaughter's wedding and and became sick. She had 99% blockage in her artery and had to pay upfront before they did the surgery. Then they asked for more money, since they was another blockage I believe, and then again before they would release her. I think in the end she's looking at over $100,000 in bills. Just a thought for you, especially if there are any health issues that anyone has to begin with.

I haven't traveled much. Do any of you experienced travelers have a recommendation which I should purchase? There are several travelling tips that every person must take into account. The most important of them are connected to the correct choice of the travling agency. They are responsible for your coming back home. That is the reason why a lot of people have not enough experience in traveling, but follow their friends recommendations and have a lot of positive emotions the trip.
